“We’re here because it is more important than ever to have a united voice heard defending duty free,” said Antonio Vencesla, WWDF Corporate Affairs & Communication Director, talking to the TFWA Daily in the Press Centre.

“The pandemic has caused certain anolomies – obviously the duty free trade in tobacco was hit hard, while in contrast the domestic trade grew – we have to be careful that governments do not use these arguments to question the travel retail channel further as there is clearly a lack of understanding – this was well illustrated by the UK’s decision to scrap tax free allowances, despite the wealth of scientific proof that it would hurt brands, retailers and airport landlords.”

Indeed, in contrast Vencesla reports that “tobacco in duty free is trading 10% above passenger recovery – vividly illustrating the power that tobacco has to drive footfall and recovery.”
