E lliot Gillespie (left) President of San Francisco’s Gold Bar, produces a whiskey which has aviation enthused into its very elements – after all it is distilled in Pan Am’s iconic and protected Treasure Island terminal where Pan Am Clipper flying boats departed San Francisco to the rest of the world in the 1930s. You can visit Treasure Island and watch the master distiller, Montgomery Paulsen (seen here wearing the hat), perform his art – or you can just head down to the Yellow Village here in the Palais where he is here all week. Paulsen not only knows his whiskey, he was a wine-maker for 20 years, and that matters a lot as all Gold Bar whiskey is matured in Napa Valley casks. “We’re listed in seven of the world’s top 10 global GTR operators, and our goal in being in Cannes is that we will be in all 20 of the world’s top 20 operators,” says Gillespie, talking to the TFWA Daily in the exhibition yesterday. Besides being one of the top-selling American whiskey brands in SFO and JFK, Gillespie notes that Gold Bar is also very well recognised internationally; for instance, being a leader in the South Korean premium category. This year in Cannes, Gold Bar has launched “Rickhouse” which is cask-strength, 103 Gold Bar: Distilled in an historic Pan Am terminal; flying off the shelves of an airport near you proof, and bottled in a 1-litre container specially for travel retail. “Normally the higher proof whiskies do not make it into travel retail, but we have made our ambitions in the category clear – we want GTR to have our unique premium product.” GreenVillage L66 N ew exhibitor Carpisa is the Italian leader in the bags, luggage and accessories market.
