APTRA President Sunil Tuli: “Looking ahead, we must remain vigilant and proactive. The challenges we face are significant, but so are the opportunities. By working together, sharing insights and supporting one another, we can navigate these turbulent times and emerge stronger.” APTRA highlights advocacy drive amid regional uncertainty A sia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA) President Sunil Tuli provided an insightful regional update in yesterday’s TFWA Asia Pacific Conference, sharing insights on the association’s key projects and advocacy initiatives. Tuli outlined the APTRA’s regulatory priorities, India market progress and long-term optimism for Asia Pacific travel retail. The wide-ranging regional update outlined how APTRA is supporting the industry through a period of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. “With APTRA supporting the industry across more than 45 markets, our mission in 2026 is to support our members through the fast-changing and often uncertain environment around us,” Tuli said, highlighting the growing importance of advocacy and government engagement across the region. He noted that APTRA has actively advocated for the industry in more than 15 markets over the past 18 months, particularly around regulation affecting key categories such as tobacco and alcohol. Tuli pointed to India as a recent advocacy success story following the federal government’s decision earlier this year to increase arrivals duty free allowances by 50% to 75,000 rupees (US$800). APTRA has worked closely with retailers and airport operators on the issue for several years. Alongside regulatory work, Tuli highlighted APTRA’s efforts to stimulate growth through insight-led initiatives, including the APTRA India Conference series. While acknowledging short-term pressures on aviation and travel demand linked to geopolitical instability, rising fuel costs and economic uncertainty, Tuli stressed that the long-term outlook for Asia Pacific remains strong. “The fundamentals of Asia Pacific aviation remain strong,” he said, citing rising middle-class demand, airport investment and growing outbound travel across the region. “As APTRA marks its 21st anniversary in 2026, we remain committed to standing with the industry through this crisis, just as we have through many others,” Tuli concluded.
